Usually I make random sketches looking for an idea to develop.
I started to analyze some subjects that could have some reference in some legend or fairy tale and in the end I focused on the caterpillars, I decided to illustrate Caterpillar not in an undergrowth but among the branches of a tree with the sky between the leaves.
I can only share one photo because the other photos that I used as reference I borrowed on Pinterest and are not my property.
I find the leaves of the beech trees against the light in spring particularly evocative.
I apologize for the quality of the photo.

Met een zwarte Bic-pen heb ik een serie kleine duimspijkertjes gemaakt en daarbij één van de twee rupsen onderaan de pagina uitgekozen.

Nadat ik de schets had gescand, begon ik met de compositie en de digitale kleuring. Eerst ging ik over de geometrische figuren die ik voor de constructie had gevolgd met de kleur rood. Zo liet ik de structuur zien waarop de vorm is gevormd.

Terwijl ik bezig was met de compositie van de tak en de rangschikking van de beukenbladeren, herinnerde ik me dat het een illustratie voor kinderen was. Het leek me dan ook logisch om een sigaret aan de rups toe te voegen, om zo de associatie met de rups uit Wonderland op te roepen.
Ik probeerde verschillende modellen sigarettenhouders voordat ik uiteindelijk degene met de asbak koos.
While working on the composition of the branch and the arrangement of the beech leaves, I remembered that it was an illustration for children and it came naturally to me to add a cigarette to the caterpillar to induce the association with the caterpillar of Wonderland.
I tried to use different models of cigarette holders before settling on the one with the ashtray.

Ik heb het kleurenpalet gekozen. Ik heb twee kleuren gebruikt, voornamelijk blauwgroen en bordeauxrood. Deze heb ik gecombineerd met licht loodblauw en tinten bruin voor de lucht en om de tak en de sigarettenhouder te laten opvallen.
I selected the color palette, I used two colors mainly teal and burgundy which I accompanied with a light lead blue and shades of brown for the sky and to make the branch and the cigarette holder stand out.

Voor de lijntekening heb ik een vectorpenseel met een discontinu effect gebruikt om de illustratie een minder rigide effect te geven.
Ik wilde een enigszins luchtige illustratie maken met waterverf, maar ik vond het nodig om op sommige plaatsen een beetje van de porositeit van het krijt toe te voegen.
For the lineart I used a vector brush with a discontinuous effect to give a less rigid effect to the illustration.
I wanted to create a somewhat ethereal illustration using watercolor, but I thought it was necessary to add a bit of the porosity of the chalk in some places.

Voor het brandende deel van de sigaret bedacht ik om het effect van de vonken van de senko hanabi (het typische Japanse vuurwerk dat in de hand wordt gehouden) na te bootsen. Dat specifieke stereffect zou het personage namelijk nog pittoresker en fantasierijker maken.
Om de rook te creëren heb ik het selectie- en transformatiegereedschap gebruikt, de dekking van de laag verlaagd en overvloeimodi toegevoegd.
Op de illustratie aan het einde heb ik de color burn-blending toegepast, omdat de kleurtoon voor een wereld vol wonderen iets te licht en vluchtig was.
For the lit part of the cigarette I thought of recreating the effect of the sparks of the senko hanabi, the typical Japanese fireworks that are held in the hand, because that specific star effect would have made the character even more picturesque and imaginative.
To create the smoke I used the select and transform tool, I lowered the opacity of the layer and added blending modes.
On the illustration at the end I applied the color burn blending, because for a world of wonders the color tone was a bit too pale and fleeting.

Deelname aan deze wedstrijd vond ik inspirerend. Het motiveerde me om verschillende digitale technieken te combineren en zo mijn eerste timelapse te maken.
It was inspiring to participate in this contest, it pushed me to try to mix different digital techniques, and I created my first timelapse.
