I've made a few draft sketches, and decided to go with this one, as it was probably the most "speaking" of all three.
Emma's point about making the image in greyscale was really helpful, because I kept distracting myself with changing opinions on the color scheme. As soon as I switched to greyscale, I was able to finish the image and then apply the color.

Love the feel of this! The gradient and the grid gives the image a scientific and futuristic mood.
I'm so glad you were able to focus on the shapes and creating the image step by step. I used to be distracted by color as well, that's why I realized I could wait with the coloring process and focus on one step at the time.
