Mystics. Saint Teresa of Jesus
and Saint John of the Cross, light in the Golden Age
A reflection on mysticism in the history of culture through two universal figures: Saint Teresa of Jesus and Saint John of the Cross.
The catalog was conceived as a volume that reveals its inner workings. The content is divided into two parts. The first reflects on mysticism and art through a series of articles by various authors. The second presents the works in the exhibition, discussed in five thematic sections. In terms of design, these two parts share many layout features, but they differ primarily in typography and in the way the spaces are arranged, which are more readable in the articles and much more visual in the files.
The exhibition "Mystics. Saint Teresa of Jesus and Saint John of the Cross, Light in the Golden Age" took place from October 2018 to January 2019 in the former church of the Society of Jesus, located in Caravaca de la Cruz (Murcia), as part of the activities programmed for the 2017 Jubilee Year. It explored mysticism through the works of great masters of Spanish and world painting, including El Greco, Murillo, Alonso Cano, Ribera, Chillida, and Tàpies. Also highlighted was Santiago Ydáñez's Saint John of the Cross, the largest canvas in Spain, measuring 14 meters high by 8 meters wide.
It was promoted by the Camino de la Cruz Foundation, and also included the support of the Caravaca de la Cruz City Council, the Department of Culture of the Autonomous Community, and the Diocese of Cartagena.
