Introduction
This is a portrait drawn with graphite pencil using a black and white photo reference.
Supplies
Used a Strathmore sketchbook, HB graphite pencil.
Reference photo
It took a while to find a strong photo reference for this project. The one I chose is from an old issue of Life magazine. It's actually a photo that is part of an ad.

sketching the boundaries
I used a measuring instrument for this drawing to aid is the widths, lengths, and placement of features. I decided to make the drawing the same size as the photo.

adding the shapes
This photo shows the shapes of the dark and light values.

filling in the shapes
In this photos I have added the shading to the shapes to create a two toned image.

final
This is the final drawing with corrections and added detail, particularly around the eyes, nose, and mouth.

scanned image
After finishing the drawing I scanned it as a grayscale and used the levels function in Photoshop to adjust the tones. Then cleaned up any remaining stray spots with the stamp tool.
