This is my first ever effort to create a hand drawn typographic portrait. It is a portrait of my sister. The text is a poem by Charles Baudelaire. I initially tried to do it in French but the accent marks presented an issue visually so I found the poem in English instead.
I faced many challenges. I enjoyed every step of the process, most of all the lettering, though it proved to be the hardest part as I wanted the text to follow specific paths. The only thing I did differently is that I did the full text in pencil first rather than working section by section, because I wanted to make sure it all fits well. I I had to do a lot of cleaning in Photoshop after as a result of this.
I learnt a lot through mistakes and corrections and I am looking forward to make more work like this. After submitting I did not like how I left empty areas on the cheeks for light, so I added some fine text digitally.
Thank you Sarah for sharing this wonderful technique with us.
I actually did a digital version of this as well. I am happier with it. It is more balanced. I created paths on Illustrator for the typed bits and I drew with a tablet for the hand written ones.
