Founded in 1943, Tecnológico de Monterrey is a prestigious and academically rigorous private university in Monterrey, Mexico. Following a long internal review of its pedagogy, course offerings, reputation, and international competition, Tecnológico de Monterrey launched an initiative called Tec21 to prepare the institution for a more flexible, collaborative, modern, and competitive world.
In this context, the Tecnológico de Monterrey seal began to feel somewhat dated. It had never been designed as a modern logo, as it was being used. It was difficult to use in digital formats, and not every element in the seal was relevant to the university’s offerings. However, affection for the seal was very strong.
Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv offered a way out of this impasse. By emphasizing the seal’s position as the official and formal imprimatur of the institution (on diplomas and presidential communications, for example), space is opened for a more modern and simple mark that can identify the university in everyday use.
The new symbol contains a special torch (a highly recognized element of the seal), which represents knowledge and leadership, within a blue circle, suggesting the world.
For the 75th anniversary of Tecnológico de Monterrey, this gestural symbol was created to unite the festivals, conferences, and events held to celebrate the occasion.
