Introduction
Make work about our interactions with the natural world. Challenged myself to see if I could successfully embroider a wooden set of drawers.
Supplies
Found chest of drawers, electric sander, dremel tool, colored pencil, naturally-dyed yarn and a tapestry needle
Process
Initially stripped the old paint from the chest of drawers. Then created a sketch for the field bindweed that I wanted to embroider onto it. Transferred the drawing with paper and graphite. Next, drilled many holes along the drawn lines, especially at outer corners, intersections, etc. Disassembled some sections of the chests in order to be able to drill holes all the way through.
Dyed a great deal of cotton yarn with chlorophyll dye. Began embroidering the imagery along the drilled holes. Once complete, reassembled - glued/nailed pieces back together. Polished the wood with a beeswax/olive oil polish. Attached purchased floral drawer pulls. Set dried and sealed stalks of wheat into each dresser with a small pool of melted beeswax at the bottom of each drawer.
