I chose to illustrate a tale and went with Little red riding hood.
My thumbnails are really messy with no legends so a little bit of explanation :
- Idea for top left is wolf spying on the girl while she walk in the forest.
- Idea for top right is menacing wolf standing behind the girl picking flowers. I really like that idea and thought of going with a book cover stryle kind of style.
- Idea for bottom left is wolf in bed in grandma's clothes and the girl putting her stuff on the table after arriving. This idea felt boring and pretty static.
- Idea for bottom right is girl entering the house. I was thinking of playing with hard light and shadow with this one but I think it would have give the idea that the girl was more menacing than the wolf (which can be a good idea but doesn't rely on the original tale).
I decided to work with top left thumbnail where wolf is spying on the girl while she walk in the forest.
At this point I decided to change the canvas size and used a photo I took last summer to help with shapes of the scene. Also I change a bit of the composition to match with the pic and I think it works better this way.
I must say that I rarely draw background and I'm used to work with linework most of the time, but for this piece I wanted to try something different and use textured brushes instead of drawing each leaves and strands of grass, so it explains why my sketch stays very rough and focused on the girl, the wolf and tree trunks.
Next I tried the grayscale method for coloring for the first time.
Retrospectively I can say that I could have put more time to work on that part because it would have saved time for the next steps. But since my sketch wasn't really detailed apart from the characters it was still really vague in my mind.
I guess it would have been more efficient on this piece with my usual lineart process, because I would have been more into details.
Let's threw some colors ! I wanted a sunset feeling for the scene so I went with orange, yellow and blue purple colors.
I added a rim light to help detach characters and help with the overall reading.
For the linework I made two layers, the main one with the finals elements and another one with lower opacity just to guide me with forest shapes when I'll move to coloring stage.
Next I start the coloring process with color blocking elements on differents layers, girl, tree trunks and foreground each have their own layer.
Then I separated elements going above or behind each other to organize the layers.
Finally I added the last touches, details on characters, light, I changed the colors of some of the lines, adding a bit of texture and play with some blending mode layers.
I can see some things that could have been done better but I am quite happy with the result, especially since I'm pretty new with Procreate and completely went outside of my comfort zone with background and process.
