💡 Moodboard - Search for ideas
Each new project begins by collecting ideas based on the brief. For the urban environment it should be a place in Paris and also for the storytelling I wanted to revisit the basic idea from Vincent Mahé's project - the cliché "Paris, the city of love". That's how I came up with the idea of the “Hotel Emile” vantage point with its pink flower arrangement and the “Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis” church in the beautiful old Marais district.
Back from my photo tour, I worked out a first color palette to capture the mood of the scene in general - why not in the evening when the sun is about to set.
🔥 My learning : It's so important to really take the time to work on the framing - background subjects, general mood and base colors - of the illustration at the very beginning, before I get lost in the details in the foreground area. Too often I skip this step too quickly and end up regretting it because something fundamental is missing from the overall concept.

🧩 Thumbnails - The puzzle of ideas
These small, very rough sketches make my first ideas more concrete. The composition of the background gives the work depth and I start to think about the characters and what they are doing.
🔥 My learning: These sketches don't have to be perfect yet, instead I can take the time to play with all the ideas that come up. These sketches were created digitally, but I would like to work more analogously in this step in the long term, as I have noticed that I can depict depth better by hand on paper.

✏️ Final sketch & 💬 Storytelling
Next comes the part that takes the longest in my process - the final sketch (left side).
🔥 My learning: I should also take as much time as possible with the final sketch, because the better it is worked out, the happier I am with the end result.
On the right you can see my definition of storytelling specifically for this project - in the middle of the picture the happy couple and next to them the woman who is unhappily waiting for her date - did he get the time wrong? Maybe even his watch is wrong?
🔥 Storytelling should not be missing on top of that - that's the icing on the cake 🍰
“❤️” Harmony vs. “⚡️” Disharmony = plot tension 💥

🌈 Choose colors: A, B or C ?
As soon as the sketch is in place, I start choosing colors. In this illustration, I started each new version with the color of the sky, giving rise to 3 completely different moods: A = midday I B = morning I C = evening - and opted for the third version.
🔥 My learning: so far I have only worked out one or at most 2 color versions. But I've found that a third version makes it much easier for me to just try it out and discover surprising color combinations that I didn't even have in mind.

🎨 Final Illustration & 🌷 Mockup
As soon as the sketch and colors are in place, the next step is to finalize the illustration. To finally embed them in a magazine cover mockup, that's fun 🤩

🔥 My 5 learnings from this course summarized :
💡 Moodboard : Finding good ideas takes time → collect as many references as possible
🧩 Thumbnails : Imperfect sketches, but already working on the image depth and the basic composition
✏️ Sketch : A perfect sketch, on the other hand, takes time - the better it is worked out, the happier I am with the final result
💬 Storytelling : Don't forget the icing on the cake 🍰 → working on plot tension 💥 → playing with “Harmonie ❤️” & “Disharmonie ⚡️”
🌈 Color finding : Not only focusing on my first idea, but also use 1 version to simply new combinations - Allow color surprises !
