The wooden panels are based on a photo reference of an old barn door that looked as though it had the remains of serval different coats of paint from over the years. This was to practice wet on wet and my first use of masking fluid other than on the course window exercise. I drew the gaps between the wooden panels with permanent ink fine liner pens and then applied masking fluid over the top when the pen was dry, but the masking fluid reacted with the pen so when the masking was removed I had to darken those lines again. I also attempted to use some of the hard edges created by the wet on wet application to form the basis of the growth ring patterns on the wood and also to imply where paint had peeled off the panels to reveal an older paint application below.
