Summary
Cooking the Books with Gilly Smith is the winner of The Guild of Food Writers' Best Broadcast or Podcast Award 2022, and was shortlisted for Fortnum and Mason Best Podcast 2022.
It's about all of life from climate change to culture and politics to people through the prism of food. It's for foodie book lovers who want to hear something more profound about the way we live, making the link between delicious food and the impact of food production on the land - through books.
Hear how A-lister food writers have changed the conversation about food as Gilly talks through their four chosen food moments from their latest books. As she joins the dots between stories from the old country and food identity, plant-based recipes and climate change, she shows how a deeper connection with food really could save the planet.
Listen to all your favourite food writers from Claudia Roden to Yotam Ottolenghi, Tom Kerridge to Anna Jones, Prue Leith to Elisabeth Luard, Gill Meller to Olia Hercules, Dan Barber to Raymond Blanc as Gilly finds what's cooking in the minds of our food writing stars.
Outline next three episodes
• Gurdeep Loyal on Mother Tongue: flavours of a second generation
• Skye McAlpine on A Table Full of Love: recipes to comfort, seduce, celebrate and everything in between
• Saghar Setareh on Pomegranates and Artichokes: Recipes and Memories of a journey from Iran to Italy
How will I get them?
Their publisher publicists know my show well and have already sent me their books. I liaise with them to get their ‘four food moments’ which make the format of my show, send them my recording drill and Zoom link.
Recording Drill
Here’s the audio drill. Please read it through carefully as this will enable us to get the best audio.
We meet on Zoom, both wearing headphones plugged into the computer. This is so that we only record our own voices rather than each other’s through the computer.
We record using your phone and Voice Memos app
• Please choose to record somewhere with soft furnishings to absorb sound. High ceilings and wooden floors, and stainless steel kitchens are a nightmare!
• Download Voice Memos app which turns your phone into a recorder
• Put my number --- into your WhatsApp contacts
• Put your phone on airplane mode before starting to record
• We’ll record as live for about 30 mins
• Wetransfer or WhatsApp me the audio files recorded on Voice Memos
I’ll let you and your publicist know which Thursday your episode will drop. I’ll post on social media and tag you, and I’d so appreciate it if you could share. Indie podcasters rely on the generosity of social media sharing; a retweet or story is fine but a post about the episode, (or if you’re shy, the podcast in general or something about our chat!) would be great.
Most will share my post as a story, but occasionally a particularly generous guest will post and attract a flurry on new listeners. Here’s an example from the food writer, Gill Meller
My Podcast Community
This is what I listen to and subscribe to. They pop up on my app with every new episode. We share each other’s episodes and support each other – some of the more famous ones less so than the hobbyists…

Social IS Sharing
Finally, I connect with my foodie community every day on Instagram, less so on Facebook, and once a week with the release of my episode on Twitter. I interact all the time on Instagram, commenting, reposting and sharing other people's news as a story.
