ENZO IT’S LINA is an archive of tape recordings and telephone answering machines from the 80s and 90s coming from all over Italy. It is a cross-section that documents an era in which there was no internet connection and one could not imagine the sensation of having to be available, everywhere, always. There are conversations, interruptions, noises, and expectations, as well as voices that feature different accents.
The project has developed in various phases. We have taken care of all the visual aspects: the archive logo, the crowdfunding materials aimed at helping finance the production of a sound film, its manifesto, and the visual identity of the exhibition.
The archive logo strives to represent two nuclei connected to each other by a thin bridge, as the answering machine responded to the functional purpose of responding for you while you were far away.
The proposal for crowdfunding materials is inspired by Bruno Munari’s designs for Favole al telefono (Fables on the Telephone) by Gianni Rodari: fast and spontaneous, yet powerful in their simplicity, they are quickly imprinted into the mind.
The typography is highlighted and erased, overwritten by simple icons, such as the answering machine, designed to continually be erased and written over.
The film is a dark screen, almost black. The rustling of a ribbon, a few breaths, and the words spoken between people, and waiting time are overheard. The manifesto is based on the concept of overwriting, evoking a mixture of sounds, conversations, and noises that accompanies the narration and contrasts with the film’s visual minimalism.
The installation reconstructs the dialogue between sound and image that is absent in the film. The audio fragments are combined with a selection of photographs from collections at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Cinisello Balsamo: images of buildings, windows, and facades of buildings made in the Milan area by masters of Italian landscape photography. The installation, which took place in conjunction with the film’s screening, shares the graphic.
ENZO, IT’S LINA is a project of ENECE FILM, a working group that produces audio visual products, installations, performances, and documentaries.
