Sudario is a limited-edition publication. It is a stratification of content that together paints a picture of Southern Italy, editing it in a way that renders it dialogue.
Sudario is a flexible project in which the headboard and the format are the only constant elements among the different numbers, rendering it a field for experimentation: the graphic system is born from the analysis of the contents that are supported by fonts, colors, and paper and cardboard solutions that are always different.
The last distinctive element is its Risograph printing, which is a high-speed system that responds to the desire for a raw return of the contents.
The word sudario originally referred to a thin piece of cloth used by Roman soldiers to wipe off sweat. Later, it was used to refer to the mourning shroud covering the body of a deceased person. Eventually, it became semantically synonymous with The Holy Shroud, the cloth in which the body of Jesus Christ was wrapped with after his death.
Despite its historical context, the word and its meaning are inextricably linked to the concepts of absorption, suffering, spirituality and threshold. Using these terms as points of reference in its research, TVFL chose the word sudario as the title for its collective work.
Sudario is a sort of cultural blanket, which, from time to time, is laid across the various areas of Southern Italy, absorbing its most striking and axiomatic features, revealing its shadows, stains, folds and moods.
