Back in 2018, I made a meme.
I created a fake magazine cover to joke about cranky old white men who wrote disparaging articles about the younger generations. And it went viral.
It dawned on me that a fake cover is a great medium for satire, so I started doing more of them, targeting people who piss me off: misogynists, homophobes, racists, climate deniers…
Suddenly, I was getting articles written about me on national press. It was featured on TV shows. I started getting a lot of followers on social media.
In 2020, Infolibre –one of the country’s leading newspapers– asked me to do the covers for them on a weekly basis (you can check them out here, if you’re curious and speak Spanish), which I’m still doing to this day.
Basically, what started out as side project turned into a side job (I now get literally paid to make memes), has gotten me over 25K followers on Twitter so far (including TV personalities, journalists and several members of the government) and has even brought about a few copycats.
So, you know… maybe memes are not that silly after all.
