Digital Fantasy Portraits - Karmen Loh

I’m so pleased with the progress I made through this course, I’ve been dying to get back into portraiture for so long, and this course prompted me to spend a lot of focused time on it!

I wanted to leave some notes about what I learned from this course here for my future self:
1. The sketch phase is crucial. The forms need to be correct before moving on to the painting phase. No amount of detail or skillful painting will fix flawed forms.
2. In digital art, colour can be corrected later with curves and layers. It’s best to focus on rending the values correctly and then focus on colour later. (Value does all the work but colour gets all the credit.) A quick trick to shade skin and hair is to colour pick and increase brightness/decrease saturation for highlights, and to decrease brightness and increase saturation for shadows.
3. Don’t be afraid of using references! My biggest mistake was thinking as an artist I needed to always generate new poses and people, which limited my practise with real anatomy. USE REFERENCES, all great artists do!
