Creative Writing
There is something about reading, exploring pages of a book (without the weight of examinations). The first book I would say fascinated my young mind would be the bible, I didn’t understand what I read but my mind was drawn by the numerous stories written in the Bible.
Fast forward to reading my first novel, holding the book in my hand was the feeling of love at first sight. Merely holding the book, going through the pages, filled me with joy without reading it. The energy that drove me through each page prevented me from dropping the book until I was done reading.
There was a night I sneaked out, lit the lantern and started reading, this was one night of the many nights I woke up to read when everyone was sound asleep but this night was different. It was my first Christian fiction ‘A time to Dance’ by Karen Kingsbury. This book talked about faith so well that it resonated with my young mind. The book was about marriage for God’s sake and I was in my teens but it resonated with me because of how it described our relationship with God and as a young believer I needed to see God as more than just a myth or tradition but as someone who exists, cares for me and is concerned about everything I do.
When I think about books, I see them as windows, an invitation to leave your world behind and jump through it into another world; the world of the writer. It is an adventure where you see through the lens of the author and you are given the rare privilege into the mind of the author.
I love being the reader, to enjoy such privilege even though it’s not long-lived. I don’t know how much about writing but I’ve always loved books.
Michelle Obama’s book “Becoming” drives me to wonder what about a book that gets to me every time. Is it about the feel of the book when held?
What about the smell? The smell of paper.
With Michelle Obama’s book, I felt the story, with each words written, each emotions described, I could feel it.
As I approach the end of the story, the adventure gradually comes to an end and I am back to my real world.
