Hazel Bartram-Birchenough

I need to focus on sculpting from life. I was attracted by the beautiful sculptures promoting this course and was immediately prompted to join.

Apparently I drew a horse, and played in mud when I was three years old. When I was 7 years, I saw a small post card of a Van Dyke painting, the Blue Boy, at school and was mesmerized, soon after, my parents took me to the National Gallery in London and I stood in front of a Rembrandt and cried because it was so beautiful. I found out that year that there was such a thing as an artist, and I made my choice. I have been working everyday in the studio for most of my life.

I’m a mature, professional artist and musician with studios in Houston, TX and Nottingham, England. With many solo and group shows all over the UK, and in 12 US states in museums, galleries, cathedrals and other public buildings.

Completed College/ University courses, in Loughborough foundation course, BA honours in Fine Art and Art History in Liverpool UK, where I joined successful rock and experimental music bands and orchestras. Followed by graduate courses in London in Sculpture, Music and Business. Since then I studied Classical Music in Houston, and was in the atelier group run by my friend and mentor, Willy (Wei Le) Wang for about 10 years life drawing each week.

I’ve been a university and college professor, teacher and artist in residence at all academic levels in Fine Art and Design in the UK and in Houston TX. I’ve run atelier and non academic courses as well.
