"Las Kikeninas" or "Meninas in Assembly" is a reinterpretation of Velázquez's painting, this version represents the "15M" movement that emerged in Madrid in May 2011. In the lower right we can see a girl with a megaphone and a child taking minutes, elements of the assemblies that were organized in the middle of the street.
In the center of the work appears a menina dressed in white representing the purity of the objective (a better system), this objective needs to be fed with passion (menina with a print of hearts) and optimism (menina with a print of "smiles")
In the background, going up the stairs, evil is represented as a capitalist character who leaves through the back door.
As in the original "Las Meninas", Velázquez himself appears represented but instead of carrying the Cross of Santiago on his chest, he wears a sun representing the Puerta del Sol in Madrid.
Kike Ibáñez, the author, appears self-portrait near the window with a woman.
This work was painted, using mostly acrylic and pencil and marker for some wood details, in June 2011.
