Mi proyecto del curso: Creación de un scrapbook de ilustración

Para mi proyecto he querido rehacer el cartel de la película 'Submarine' de Richard Ayoade ya que me resulta una película bastante inspiradora por sus colores, personajes, fotografía e historia.

Comencé haciendo una revisión de algunos de mis referentes que utilizan el recorte para ilustrar y me fijé mucho en el trabajo de tres autores.

En primer lugar la obra de Isidro Ferrer que me parece brillante. No solo utiliza recortes sino objetos que él mismo fabrica o elementos que podemos encontrar en nuestra vida cotidiana. Me encanta ese aire nostálgico que se intuye en sus imágenes.

For my project, I wanted to remake the poster of the film 'Submarine' by Richard Ayoade as I find it quite inspiring for its colors, characters, photography, and history.

I started by reviewing some of my references that use the cutout to illustrate, and I looked closely at the work of three authors.

First of all, I think Isidro Ferrer's work is brilliant. He uses cutouts and objects that he makes himself or elements we can find daily. I love the nostalgic air in his images.

El trabajo de Jotaká con el papel me parece divertido, fresco y dinámico. El uso de colores brillantes, formas redondeadas y sobre todo el detalle de separar los elementos de la base creando capas y volumen me encanta.

I find Jotaká's work with paper fun, fresh, and dynamic. I love the use of bright colors, rounded shapes, and especially the detail of separating the elements from the base, creating layers and volume.

Me encanta el pop up y Julia lo hace de maravilla. Me encanta como traslada objetos cotidianos al papel y como le da volumen gracias a su "ingienería del papel". Simplemente genial.

I love pop, and Julia does it wonderfully. I love how she transfers everyday objects to paper and gives them volume, thanks to her “paper engineering.” Just great.

Una vez he escogido a los que quiero que sean mis referentes para este proyecto elaboré un moodboard para mi trabajo. Escenas de la película, objetos y localizaciones del lugar en el que se desarrolla la historia me parecían clave para inspirarme a la hora de crear el cartel.

Hice una primera toma de contacto con la paleta de color y es la que más me hubiese gustado tomar, pero no encontré los tonos exactos en papel para el proyecto final así que tuve que hacer una adaptación. Podría haber creado yo los papeles en esos colores pero no quería añadir demasiada textura a la imagen final, me apetecía un acabado más como el del trabajo de Jotaká.

Once I had chosen the people I wanted to be my references for this project, I made a mood board for my work. Scenes from the film, objects, and locations of the places where the story takes place seemed to be key to inspiring me when creating the poster.

I made the first contact with the color palette I would have liked to use. However, I didn't find the exact tones on paper for the final project, so I had to make an adaptation. I could have created the papers myself in those colors, but I didn't want to add too much texture to the final image; I wanted a finish more like Jotaká's work.

Los materiales los tenía bastante claros: papel, lápices de color, ceras y acrílicos si hiciera falta en algún punto. De resto, como se puede apreciar en la foto, tijeras, pinceles, cola y cinta de doble cara con un poco de grosor para poder crear volumen en la composición.

The materials were quite explicit: paper, colored pencils, crayons, and acrylics if needed at some point. The rest, as you can see in the photo, involves scissors, brushes, glue, and double-sided tape with a bit of thickness to create volume in the composition.

Mi proyecto consta de dos partes. La primera es un álbum contenedor en el que recojo las pruebas que he ido haciendo durante el proceso de experimentación con los materiales y composición. La segunda parte del proyecto es el cartel.

Para el álbum contenedor utilicé lo aprendido durante las lecciones del curso. Fabriqué un álbum tipo acordeón en el cual añadí un sobre muy sencillo al final del mismo para guardar posibles recortes que quisiera guardar pero no añadir a la composición final del albúm, bocetos, etc.

My project consists of two parts. The first is a container album in which I collect the tests that I have been doing during the experimentation with materials and composition. The second part is the poster.

For the container album, I used what I learned during the course lessons. I made an accordion album in which I added a very simple envelope at the end to hold possible clippings, sketches, etc., that I wanted to keep but not add to the final composition of the album.

También diseñé una portada haciendo alusión a la temática del proyecto. Para ello hice una imagen con recortes de papel y lápices de colores en la que simulo una fotografía polaroid. Añadí el título con mi etiquetadora que le da un toque bastante vintage acorde a la película.

I also designed a cover alluding to the theme of the project. For this, I made an image with paper cutouts and colored pencils and simulated a Polaroid photograph. According to the film, I added the title with my label maker, which gives it a vintage touch.

Y una vez terminado mi cuaderno contenedor pasé a realizar el cartel. Primero hice un boceto para ver cómo quería componer la imagen.

Once I finished my container notebook, I made the poster. First, I made a sketch to see how I wanted to compose the image.

Esto me ayudó también a calcular bien el tamaño de los recortes y que no hubiese proporciones demasiado extrañas, aunque tampoco me obsesioné mucho con este último detalle. Muchos recortes fueron complicados por su tamaño tan reducido pero en general no hubo grandes complicaciones

This also helped me calculate the cutouts' size well and ensure that there were not too strange proportions, although I did not get too obsessed with this last detail. Many cutouts were complicated because of their small size, but there were generally no significant complications.

Para crear un poco de volumen y que no quedara todo plano utilicé cinta de doble cara con grosor (no conozco su nombre). Me gusta el aspecto que deja por capas, creando sombras según cómo le dé la luz. A continuación dejo las fotos finales de mi cartel.

I used thick double-sided tape to create a bit of volume and not make it all flat (I don't know its name). I like how it looks layered, creating shadows depending on how the light hits it. Here are the final photos of my poster.

He disfrutado mucho realizando el proyecto, me he tomado mi tiempo pero quería hacerlo con calma y con cariño. Estoy contenta con el resultado y muy probablemente continúe realizando ilustraciones con recortes.

I enjoyed doing the project; I took my time but wanted to do it calmly and with love. I am happy with the result and will probably continue making illustrations with cut-outs.
