I created this video tutorial, entitled "Bistre: Part 4 (B) Sepia Master Copy on a Hand-Prepared Paper Surface", in order to draw your attention to the intermediate phase of a master copy drawing exercise. Our master image is by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French, 1725–1805), his "Head of a Girl", 18th century, created with “chalk on slightly textured cream laid paper.” The portrait lives in the Worcester Art Museum, in Massachusetts, in the United States of America.
This installment in my full Patreon series, "Bistre: Artistic conventions within Sepia Drawing", handles several in-process concerns which govern a necessary intellectual framework for success in the drawing process. These include recognition of the delicate nature of our paper tone (from Part 4A, available in full on Patreon.com/DanThompsonArt), the interesting question of not “over finishing” a master copy, as well as the nature of reproduction-based temperature variance with historical drawings – something the museum world commonly navigates.
The materials used in this video tutorial may be acquired via this link: https://t.ly/pi8h4
These include:
1 sheet of Gutenberg by Hahnemühle (31x 41 inches/78.74 cm x 104.14 cm, 130 gsm - the paper color is called “sand”) - for the demonstration, my paper was cut down to approximately 10x15 inches/26 cm x 39 cm

Conté à Paris Pastel Pencil, no. 1355 (pencil no. 19 in the full set) – a vintage pencil (the contemporary equivalent is “Conté à Paris Pastel Pencils with 12 Assorted Colors,” which is available via the link, above

*Part 4 (B) Sepia Master Copy* by Dan Thompson is a deep dive into classic techniques, focusing on the use of sepia tones on hand-prepared paper. His approach emphasizes traditional methods of capturing form, value, and texture, making it a valuable resource for artists looking to hone their skills. Do you enjoy working with traditional media like sepia, or are you more into digital art? ragdoll hit
