The Reference Image!Acrylic Gesso is a great base under Acrylic AND Oil Paint!Love a high-flow acrylic for staining! Even under an oil painting. So satisfying to pour this right onto the surface!Having fun just spreading this paint around with no rulesMaking sure to cover all the white spotsUnderpainting complete! Just focusing on the major elements of my composition here.First time experimenting with Violet Hematite, a gorgeous earth pigment. Speeding up its dry time with Liquin!Darkening any areas in shadow to start building depth within my values. Not going too crazy on details in the tree branches. Just looking at my reference a LOT and adding in the major branches. Now we are going in with a light, semi-transparent off-white. I'm adding this anywhere that's highlighted.Carving out those major branchesSlowly adding more green earth pigment as we move closer to the tree line to emulate the foggy, distant woods.I love how colors begin to vibrate when you layer transparent pigments on top of each other!Continuing down the composition, I start painting in the general highlights/shadows of the foreground elementsWhen painting busy moments such as lot of fallen leaves, don't worry about detail! Lean into impressionist marksGoing back in with a much smaller brush to paint in our smaller branches and twigs. Constantly checking our reference! Finally working down toward the bottom, painting some dirty snow piles by the roadside.Adding final touches, including subtle highlights in the tree branches & tree trunkHere's our finished painting! I had so much fun working strictly with earth-based pigments to paint the earth.
