Who doesn't love fresh fruit in the Spring? This decoration concept was all about coming as close to a realistic strawberry as I could by using buttercream alone.
The key to doing that was to create a realistic outer texture of a strawberry. Strawberries are not perfectly smooth on the outside - they have lots of little divots on the outer surface where the seeds go! So to achieve this texture, I first piped, shaped, and smoothed the red base of the strawberry and froze it. Then, once the cupcake was frozen, I used a carving tool to carefully carve out very small divots across the entire strawberry.
Finally, the step that took the most patience was adding all the tiny yellow seeds. I didn't use a piping tip for this part because I needed the tip opening to be so tiny!
The best part of this strawberry cupcake is that it's also filled with strawberry jam so you get a burst of that juicy strawberry flavor when you bite into it.
