Biologo

I have always had a great interest in nature - from an aesthetic point of view, but also in general aspects of biology and other natural sciences. As an artist and graphic designer, I like to be inspired by plants, animals, and other organisms, as in this project.

In this logofolio, I have collected some abstract geometric logotypes with animal motifs. Some of them are older, unused concepts from former client projects, but most of them I designed especially for this project.

For me, the biggest challenge in creating good logos is always to create as much recognition as possible with very simple shapes. I almost always use grids for my logo or type designs, as well as 45° and 90° angles. I also use straight lines almost exclusively and circular shapes for curves, so always very geometric and reduced. These tricks limit the design a bit. But they also help to create a consistent aesthetic for the symbol and to create variations quickly.

Especially with animal shapes, this technique can be a bit difficult, as they tend to have organic and round shapes. But an exercise like this can help you create better logos because it forces you to abstract. For example, how can you draw a 'round' fish using only angular shapes and as few lines as possible without it looking arbitrary?

Designing this project taught me how powerful a counterintuitive aesthetic can be for such symbols. I was surprised at how small details, such as the dragonfly's square eyes or the swan's rectangular beak, create easily recognisable images despite their surreality.

Another useful side effect of such a project is to build up an archive of new ideas for logos and theoretically sellable logos.
