Sketch one- your reference photo- I love the ocean! I have never drawn a bird or an animal before! The reference photo is also mostly monochromatic ( is that the right word?). What color/ hue to use? There is one seagull, but are the others European Herring gulls? I want to know about the birds I am painting. This painting will be a challenge! I wish I could print out the reference photo to add to this, but I am unable to with a PDF.
The second is my photo when I spent a few weeks in Kauai. My retirement gift to myself to see our daughter. This was the view from my balcony in Princeville! Breathtaking! The huge challenge will be the clouds as I have not learned how to paint them yet. Also teaching myself to make the palms looser not all as detailed. Finding the right blue for the Pacific! It is filled with bright vibrant colors. The opposite of my first sketch. I am excited about attempting these two challenging reference photos.
I have the wrong colors for the darkest part of the Kauai painting. Not sure how I am going to fix that. I should have had all my colors chosen before starting! lesson learned I thought that green, blue, and some black would give me a good, but I don't like the hue of green. I also hope to be able to make a straight horizon line for the Pacific. This will no doubt be just a first draft!
I am also having trouble with the monochromatic sea reference photo. I added some blue to Payne's gray. However, I need to learn how to paint water! Thi sis such fun!
