I had a fairly easy time coming up with ideas for drawings for My Favorite Dopamine Boosters. I made a list and drew them, some individually and some combined and played with moving them around. I’m very familiar and comfortable using Procreate, and the creation was pretty organic.
I felt like MFDB was a warmup for the project that I had chosen, Story Stewardship, from a chapter in Brené Brown’s book, Atlas of the Heart. The phrase “walking alongside” made me snag the shoes from MFDB to use again. I listen to audiobooks and podcasts when I walk alone, and when I walk with family and friends, we’re always sharing stories. Walking and stories go hand-in-hand, or foot-by-foot, for me. Sometimes I’m telling the story, and sometimes I’m hearing it.
I did want to “honor the sacred nature of story’, so I tried to look for a shape that would serve as a sacred space, and I also wanted to center the storyteller. I lost the honeycomb feeling in the final frame, but I like the flow. I used color to differentiate between sharing and hearing a story, but in a conversation, the roles can be very fluid.
I had extreme difficulty coming up with pictures to align with each of the stewardship elements. Just after beginning this project, I had a conversation with my mom, and for the first time I recognized why our conversations often go awry. Continuing the project has been a great meditation on setting boundaries and expectations for future conversations. I decided to focus on text that was brief and pointed. Maybe having the example of poor story stewardship served the project well.
I chose the tan background because I was working at night and wanted to avoid the bright light, but I decided that I liked the warmth and added a paper texture on top. The writing could be a little more polished, but I do have ADHD, and I ran out of patience. I also (now) believe in “good enough” (recovering perfectionist), thank goodness. The informal presentation might make the message more familiar and accessible. I hope so.
I’m grateful for the course. I’ve learned a lot through both your instruction and coursework. I am surprised at how invested I got in the coursework and how that investment increased as the course continued. I definitely plan to continue, the rewards and applications are guaranteed to keep me playing with this blended info plus art form. Thank you for the enjoyable and comprehensive intro!

Teacher PlusThis is great! I really loved seeing and reading about your process. The structure is very strong and the shoes are a lovely device. I wouldn't worry about not pushing the typography harder - you've got really legible handwriting anyway and you've used colour switches and capitalisation to lift the content. The title font is striking and carefully done.
It took me a while to spot that there were two sides to the content, so maybe the 'when choosing to hear' and 'when choosing to share' panels needed more of a lift and perhaps a directional arrow to help navigate to the content that follows. I think it would have been nice to see more illustration - especially as you've chosen such a human subject. Some brick people could have done some great storytelling for you. But overall, great job. I'm really pleased you enjoyed the course and that the process has been helpful to you in more ways than you'd anticipated!

@scriberia Thank you! I’ll try some adjustments to better to lift and direct to navigate the content. I think I’ll create separate panels for hearing and sharing with illustrations. I appreciate the feedback!
