For me, everything starts in a sketchbook. Among the most meaningful projects I've completed are ones inspired by my life experiences, even when bittersweet.
Shown here is a multi-disciplinary project that includes drawings, a painting, and other elements made during a year of mourning the loss of Blackie the Cat. It culminated as a memorial event in August 2021 that included performative elements like instrumental music, singing, movement, and costumes. It was a collaboration with many others, including musician Troy Everett, artist Yukari Fujimoto of Flat Bonnie, and fashion designer Aliona Kononova.
The real Blackie the Cat collaborated with me to create installations, plush toys, and stories. He also inspired my characters ChouChou, who takes away negative energy and hate, and Ahwroo who is vicious when he needs attention.
Through this project I honor the dynamic personality of this cat, as well as share his many talents. He was a healer, a cheerleader, mighty, persistent, and compassionate.
