Ximena Corcuera is a fashion designer who seeks to make people aware of the possibilities offered by upcyling and sustainable materials that can be used to the detriment of the commons. With a trajectory of years full of experiences and learning, collaborating with big fashion names like Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, in this course she will teach you to create pieces through the fabric giving new use to materials that you would consider disposable.

Ximena Corcuera will teach you the importance of joining this movement. You will know some of the important data on the environmental impact of the fashion industry, as well as new options to create sustainable fashion. You will learn a technique of upcycling from the fabric that will allow you to create your own clothes, favoring a circular economy.

About this course

First you will meet Ximena and how life was leading him towards fashion design almost without realizing it, until 100% dedicated to it and creating his brand in 2018, a space where he unites all his interests, vision and experience in sustainable fashion. You will meet their main references for research and development of proposals zero waste .

You will discover some of the most relevant data on the environmental impact of the fashion industry and the main events in order to raise awareness about it. You will know the characteristics of sustainable materials, you will understand why cotton entails one of the most damaging processes for the environment, and you will see possible more responsible variants such as organic and recycled cotton, among other novel materials. In addition, you will discover new techniques and manufacturing processes that are emerging as exploration points to create sustainable fashion.

Ximena will explain step by step the technique of weaving upcycling . You will review in detail the materials you need to give a new life to old garments, then focus on the design of your piece, analyzing the combinations of materials and color blends.

You will prepare the molds to achieve the different woven pieces and also the material that you will use, transforming it through cuts and knots. Once you have all the materials ready, you will learn the base fabric in all its phases to weave each piece and then join them until you get a garment as a final result. These techniques can be replicated with different types of textile waste, as well as more closed or open fabrics to achieve different results. The idea is that you know the tool so you can experiment freely.

Finally, you will know the washing care that you must take into account. In addition, as an inspiration, you will see different pieces made with this technique to learn about the possibilities it offers, along with other techniques that you can explore to continue your journey in the world of sustainable fashion.

What is this course's project?

You will make a sweater, applying the knitting technique inspired by upcycling , where from old clothes you will make a new garment.

What you need

You will not need previous knowledge, but if you already have a little experience with the pattern and the fabric it will be easier for you to complete the course.

On the materials, you will need scissors for fabric, a sheet of manila paper, masking tape , pencil, rubber, pencil sharpener, rulers, old clothes that you want to use in your project (between 6 to 12 garments that have spandex or lycra, such as leggins , socks, sweatshirts, shirts, pants, among others).

From an early age he made different projects related to fashion, but he did not discover that this was his passion until later. Ximena has more than 5 years of experience in the world of fashion, trends, experimental design, sustainable fashion, retail and the licenses that have led her to learn from great teachers in countries such as Mexico, France, Spain, Brazil, Guatemala, Chile, Argentina and Ecuador, among others.

He is currently working on his own project where he seeks to generate cultural experiences through fashion responsibly, and show it as a powerful channel for expressing ideas to connect with each other.
