Learn animal illustration from sketch to realism using mixed media, watercolor, charcoal, colored pencils, and oil painting

Specialization · 6 modules

Embark on a creative journey through the art of pet illustration, where you’ll explore a range of traditional techniques. Start with the basics of sketching animals, simplifying complex anatomies into basic forms using pencils, watercolors, and collage. Delve into the world of monochromatic illustration, mastering the use of charcoal and ink to create visually striking and expressive pieces. As you progress, introduce color with watercolors, focusing on tonal values and color theory to bring out the personality and structure of each animal.

Venture further into the realm of hyperrealism with colored pencils, capturing the intricate details of fur, eyes, and noses to achieve photo-realistic results. Finally, elevate your skills with the sophisticated alla prima technique in oil painting, from canvas preparation to gallery-worthy finishes. This specialization, guided by expert artists Jenny Rae, Laura McKendry, Sarah Stokes, Camila Correa Castro, and Marcelo Rochá, provides a comprehensive toolkit for capturing the essence and beauty of pets. Whether for personal enjoyment or professional development, this path empowers you to immortalize cherished animal companions with artistic mastery.

Duality in oil painting
Duality is a fundamental concept in oil painting, because if we know how to explore it skillfully and together with the pictorial repertoire, which I will present in the next class, we will be able to add elements to the painting that will make it more interesting than the reference itself or subject. But for this theme to be more explicit, I will present it in practice in my own paintings. Since I started my painting studies, I began to notice how contrast, the antagonistic or what I try to call duality is very frequent in the works of the great masters of oil painting. Therefore, I prepared this class to address this concept and also because we are going to apply it in practice in this course.
