## Content

### Introduction

HI! I welcome you to my Domestika course.

I am an art director, but also a journalist and editor-in-chief of the newspaper La Repubblica. I graduated in design from the architecture faculty of the Polytechnic of Milan with a thesis on graphic journalism in newspapers. An academic project that over the years has transformed into a real profession. In this first unit I will tell you how it happened.

### The form of editorial content

As a designer, I imagine a newspaper (whether paper or digital) as an everyday "object". A newspaper is in fact evoked by a need, that of its readers to be informed, and is then gradually defined in function, designed in project, implemented in production, distributed as goods, classified in consumption behavior and finally experienced in use.

The role that design has is to enrich this product of daily use with a formal, non-artistic aura, although of an aesthetic nature, which can increase, with the same function, both its use value (as a tool and interface), both its formal value (exalting its ability to appear and its cultural and social role), and its economic value.

### The elements of the project

It's time to start working on our design. To guide you in this task, we will explore the basic elements of our project.

### Think long term

To best design a new information experience it is necessary to resolve a major dichotomy now present in editorial offices. Within project teams, editors are not yet involved enough in thinking about how the newspaper experience should evolve across different platforms, and product managers are often unaware of the newspaper's priorities.
