Artistic vision is shaped by learned perspectives and filters that we're often not even aware of. For painter Torsten Wolber, this realization became the key to carving out his personal portraiture technique. He approaches his art with confidence, without waiting around for a concrete result. His oil paintings can be found in private collections and galleries, as well as in publications such as Der Spiegel and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

In this course, he teaches you a new method for painting shape-oriented portraits using a photograph as a reference. Torsten Wolber starts off by telling you a little about his work and career as a painter, then shows you some of his art and sources of inspiration.

He goes on to show you the materials needed as well as how to make and correctly prepare your canvases like a professional. Next, choose the color scheme and learn how to mix tones in a way that's really going to favor the overall aesthetic. Get straight to work on the first sketch in different shades of gray.

Devise your final project and explore how to choose the right image and how to compose a good drawing. Then paint on the canvas and use a ruler to create a faint grid that's not too noticeable. Highlight the proportions of the face by covering them with different colors, starting with the darker shades and gradually getting to the lighter ones.

To finish, refine some smaller details and tweak your painting even more to the likeness of the reference photo. Add power and expression to the portrait by simplifying some details, using expressive techniques, changing perspective, and eliminating some elements. Wrap up the course with some tips from Torsten on successfully finishing off each piece.

Painter

The fascination for expressive, defined, and atmospheric pictures has been with painter Torsten Wolber since he was a child. When he worked in the world of illustration, he created covers and images for video game companies, advertising agencies, and newspapers, particularly online ones. For a long time, he set aside his desire to make a living from painting, but because of an unprecedented event, he decided to devote himself to plein air painting, his true artistic passion. It was only a few years later that he felt ready to work exclusively in this sector.

From the time he was studying graphic design, he was inspired by classic painters such as John Singer, Sargent, Sorolla, Anders Zorn, and Richard Schmid. He currently draws inspiration from the painting process itself and likes to let himself be carried away by oil painting. His style is characterized by being free, defined, and emotional, but also by its sense of reflection and the calm it transmits. His work includes mainly landscapes, social themes, and portraits that can be found in galleries and private collections in countries such as Germany, the United States, Japan, Australia, and England.
