Silja begins the course by telling you how she became an illustrator and what influences her work at the moment, along with a brief explanation of what you’re about to learn in the course.

Get a brief overview of the history of book covers, and then delve into the secrets that make a successful book cover. Silja shows you the main graphic styles and invites you to explore your bookstore to identify them and find inspiration.

Play a brainstorming game to find which piece of literature inspires you most, and then play another game to start coming up with initial ideas. Next, do some background research and gather visual references to complement your ideas.

Next, create your thumbnail sketches and decide on the idea you want to carry further. Sketch on either Procreate or scraps of paper to refine your chosen idea, experimenting with different elements until you find the one you like. Then, see Silja’s expert do’s and don'ts for illustrating book covers.

Silja shows you how she works on her illustration first by using pencil and paper, inviting you to use the method that works best for you. Then scan your drawing and use Photoshop to work on the texture and color. See how to observe your work and add finishing touches to make it pop, and get your file ready for print.

Illustrator

Silja has always loved to draw, and with the encouragement of her parents, she kept it up and decided early on that she wanted to become an illustrator. She studied Communication Design in Nüremberg while working as an illustrator for a magazine about animals for children, along with some work for magazines like Elle and Cosmopolitan.

Silja worked as a layout designer for Allegra Magazine (Germany) for over two years, where she learned to see illustration from an art director’s perspective. After deciding she wanted to create illustrations instead of working with the work of others, she took a leap of faith and moved to Spain, where she started working as a freelance illustrator.

She has worked with press clients like The New Yorker, Elle, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Die Zeit, Outdoor magazine, and more, as well as on advertising projects for clients like Estrella Damm. Her book cover illustrations adorn the books of publishers like Penguin Random House, Harper Collins, Gräfe und Unzer, and Doubleday.
