Meet Self-Taught Dressmaker Juliet Uzor, in this Domestika Diary
Dressmaker Juliet Uzor tells us about her creative process and daily rituals, in this Domestika Diary
Juliet Uzor learned how to sew in 2013. Then she made one of her 2020 New Year’s Resolutions to stop buying clothes and to start making them herself. This same English designer also won the BBC Great British Sewing Bee in 2019.
This edition of the Domestika Diary took us to meet this dressmaker, teacher and content creator in London, where we got to witness a day in her life.

“You can’t find the clothes I make in a store. They are a clear expression of who I am, and they fit my personality,” she explains. Juliet browses the stores in her London neighborhood to find gorgeous fabrics.
Other swatches were given to her, like a present from her Dad that she made into what is now one of her favorite dresses.

Juliet won the Great British Sewing Bee with her design for a fabulous long red dress. “It was very tricky to make and is very special,” she glows.

She has her own YouTube channel, where she creates fashion-related content. Juliet also writes for the specialist magazine: Love Sewing. She creates her designs and the content for her channel in her home studio. Surrounded by sewing machines, threads, patterns, needles and plants, this is where the designer creates the dresses that will become part of her wardrobe.
Juliet Uzor uses her lunch break to go out for a walk and take a moment to be by herself. She plans her sewing work over coffee. And she’s also an elementary school teacher!
