Meet the 10 Female Photographers of World Press Photo 2021

Following the announcement of this year’s winners, we spotlight the 10 female nominees

The World Press Photo Contest recognizes the best visual journalism of the last year, rewarding images and stories in eight categories: Contemporary Issues, General News, Environment, Long-Term Projects, Nature, Spot News, Sports, and Portraits. This year, 4315 photographers from 130 countries entered 74,470 images.

Of the 45 photographers nominated, only 10 are women. Following the announcement of this year’s winners, we spotlight the 10 female nominees, two of whom have just been awarded first place in their categories.

Evelyn Hockstein

Evelyn Hockstein is a photojournalist based in Washington, DC, and the only woman to be nominated for World Press Photo of the Year 2021. The nominated photograph, Emancipation Memorial Debate, was awarded the first prize in the singles Spot News category. It shows a white man disagreeing with a Black woman about the removal of the Emancipation Memorial in Lincoln Park.

The photo was taken on June 25, 2020, a day that saw around 100 people gather at the monument, clashing over whether it should be removed or not. Hockstein has worked in more than 70 countries covering civil war, political unrest, humanitarian crises, and natural disasters for The Washington Post, The New York Times, Helsingin Sanomat, and others.

Tatiana Nikitina

Tatiana Nikitina is a Russian photographer exploring cultural traditions, ecology, and the ways that people with disabilities socially adapt. In her photo, In Flight, nominated in the category of Portraits, we see a father teaching his 10-year-old autistic daughter Ksenia to launch a toy plane in Moscow.

The concept of autism is relatively new in Russia, where there is frequently a negative attitude to people who have such behavioral disorders, and people are often ashamed of being on the autism spectrum. Not many medical and non-medical professionals are familiar with autism, and it is frequently misdiagnosed. Parents of children with ASDs can experience difficulty in finding support programs.
