Basic Materials to Start in Woodworking

Patricio Ortega shows us how to execute a home carpentry project using basic tools and materials

Patricio Ortega is the founder of artisanal furniture workshop Maderística (@maderistica), where art and design come together to create unique pieces. He teaches the Domestika course Professional Woodworking for Beginners.

Patricio shares the materials you will need to create your first carpentry projects with his expert guidance: a three-legged stool.

Materials

- Wood (in Patricio’s project, you will use pine plywood, but you can use a different type of plywood), 18 mm thick for the seat and the legs.

- Leftover cuts or cut ends from your sheet. Ask for the extra bits when they cut your wood.

- MDF to make stencils.

Tools

- Pencils (2mm for drawing lines and another for marking)

- Carpenter’s framing square

- Metal ruler

- Combination or carpenter’s try square

- Try square

- Hammer

- Cutter

- Double-sided contact tape

- Wood glue

- Sandpaper

- One-inch nails

- Screws (from 1 to 1/4)

- 10 mm wooden block

- Mask (preferably with breathing valve)

- Headset (to protect ears)

- Goggles (to protect eyes)

- Gloves (painting ones, not for electrical tools)

- Workbench

Electrical tools and extras

- Milling tool (or hand milling machine)

- Drill

- Jigsaw

- 10 mm drill bit

- 10 mm wood drill bit

- Half-inch end mill

- ¼ inch molding

- Squarehead bit

- Fine jigsaw blade
