BCN Rise & Fall: The Street Art of Barcelona

  • by Harry Davies @harry_davies

Watch this documentary on the golden age of Barcelona street art

In the nineties, Barcelona became an unmissable destination for urban artists. Suddenly, the city walls were flooded with the art of internationally renowned creators such as Banksy, Space Invaders, London Police, and Os Gemeos, among many others.

The documentary BCN Rise & Fall reviews the golden age of street art in Barcelona and reflects on its current state. It is an important analysis of how the peculiar graffiti and urban art scene was created in the city.

On the other hand, the film explores another aspect of great interest, hence its title: the sudden disappearance of the movement. In the documentary, you will see interviews with the people who were there: from artists (among them, Sixe Paredes, Jorge Rodríguez Gerada, El Pez, el Xupet Negre, and Dixon) to the authorities who tried to regulate what was happening.

Around the year 2000, a golden era of urban art began in Barcelona until, in 2006, the local government began to penalize artists who created in public spaces. The city continues to keep graffiti from the streets.

The directors recall that in other cities around the world, such as Lisbon, Berlin, or Toronto, urban art has become a tourist attraction, part of the cities' identities.

This documentary starts a conversation: where should state regulations regarding urban art begin? Why do we see cities full of advertising while art is labeled as a criminal practice?
