Craft Tutorial: How to Make a Felt Lampshade with Wet Felting | Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Learn how to transform wool fibers into a beautiful, handmade lampshade using wet felting techniques.

Have you ever wondered what wet felting is all about? This traditional textile technique allows you to transform wool fibers into durable and decorative objects, from seamless cushions to DIY felt lampshades. In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through the process of making a felt lampshade with wet felting step by step.

The first step in creating your felt lampshade is ensuring that your design lines match up. Overlap the sides to check that the patterns connect smoothly around the lampshade. Mark the edges with a pen so you know where each piece will overlap. This guarantees a straight, even line around your lampshade.

Next, cut along the edge of the felt to create a clean surface. Then, attach the kit liner—a sticky back plastic sheet—to the back of your felt. This provides structure and stability. Once attached, trim away the excess felt from the edges you’re not keeping.

To secure the join, add double-sided tape along the short edge. Carefully line up the felt edges along the plastic liner, rolling them together evenly. Just before finishing the join, remove the tape covering to lock everything into place.

At this stage, your project will really start to take shape. Fold any fiber excess neatly around the edges, applying a strong textile glue to secure the overlap. Smooth it down for a polished finish. Finally, use the included tool to tuck under the last bits of excess felt and material, completing your DIY felt lampshade.

And there you have it—your wet felted lampshade is finished! This project combines creativity, functionality, and traditional craft techniques to make something truly unique for your home.
