How to improve your resume to stand out in the creative industry

Key tips for designing a CV that captures the attention of recruiters and clients in creative industries.

.

Your creative CV should showcase experience, education, style, personality and communication skills. Make it a tool that will open doors.

1. Take care of the visual composition.

First impressions matter. Use design principles such as balance, hierarchy and strategic use of color to guide reading. Avoid generic templates and go for a structure that reflects your approach as a creative professional.
Tip: Apply the same criteria you would use for a design piece: margins, spacing, legible typography and visual consistency.

2. Highlight your accomplishments, not just your tasks.

Beyond listing responsibilities, focus on results: what impact did your work have, did you improve conversions, develop an award-winning visual identity, manage a creative team? Use data when possible and prioritize accomplishments that may be relevant to the type of work you're looking for.

3. Customize your CV for each offer.

Research the company, its visual culture and the tone of its communications. Adjust your resume to align with those values and language. Change the examples, highlight related projects or adapt your professional bio according to the role.

4. Include portfolio (even if brief).

Especially in fields such as graphic design, illustration or art direction, including a curated selection of work is essential. You can do this with links or even by integrating thumbnails directly into the CV if the format allows it.
Remember: Quality matters more than quantity. Show pieces that speak of your versatility, but also of your approach.

5. Add a personal and authentic touch.

A brief introduction can make all the difference. What drives you as a creative professional? What makes you unique? Showcasing a well-written, authentic voice is one way to connect with those reviewing hundreds of applications.
