Illustrating a Fantasy World: Exploring Color Studies and Alternative Palettes
Hello and welcome to a world of creativity, imagination, and surprise! Today we’ll explore a bit of the process behind my online course "Creative Gameplay Maps: Illustrate a Fantasy World." I love working with color and figured it would make sense to dig into color studies a little bit. To get started, be sure to check out the course details here. Let’s dig in!

The Magic of Color Studies
Color plays a vital role in storytelling, setting the mood, and evoking emotions. It can drastically alter the trajectory of an image so much like doing multiple compositional sketches, it’s beneficial to do multiple color studies. Trying multiple palettes lets us experiment and discover more about the image before we commit to final artwork.
In the course, we'll dive into some of the fundamentals of color theory, understanding how hues, tones, and shades interact to create visual harmony. Through this exploration we can further develop our understanding of these principles and unlock greater potential with our illustrations.

Embracing Alternative Palettes
We all bring so many assumptions to our image-making. The sky is blue, the sun is yellow, etcetera. But this needn’t be the case. I often start with what I call a “traditional” color palette to act as a starting point. From here we can move on to alternatives.
What happens if the sun is pink? Or the sky is green? What does this change about the image or what can we do to further compliment this shift? Or what if we want a specific theme to our palettes? If we wanted an autumnal theme to our imagery, why not pull from nature? Or perhaps a candybar wrapper has the perfect shade of yellow to use for a character’s hat. There’s inspiration all around us and all we need to do is open ourselves to it and document it. Take a photo of that wrapper and make a palette from it!
