3 basic tips to get started with brush lettering

1. Louise explains that, traditionally, when you’re brush lettering, you apply a heavy stroke on the way down, and lighter pressure on the way up.

2. For beginners, Louise recommends drawing out ascender, descender, and baseline guidelines to help practice and define your proportions (she includes these guidelines in her worksheet).

3. Draft out your letters using a pencil first, this way you can make sure your words fit in the space before committing to the brush pen.

The worksheets shared by Louise include both tracing and free-hand exercises designed to help practice and build confidence in your brush lettering skills.

There are two styles of exercise: one to practice writing the letters of the alphabet (both lower and upper case), and the other to practice joining letters by writing out months of the year.
