Editorial design of the documentation for my Master's thesis on the topic of Randomness & Design (Zufall & Design).
This Master's thesis is an investigation of the phenomenon of randomness and its impact on design, as well as vice versa. It includes the analysis of different scientific disciplines in which chance plays a role and the investigation of its application in creative processes. Practical experiments with random generators and generative software led to a series of exhibits that take inspiration from chaos theory to perceptual psychology and are presented in an exhibition. This work invites us to better understand the concept of chance through a playful and unconventional approach.

I wanted to keep the cover design and the rules for the layout simple, as many different types of formats, images and texts should find a place in this book. In addition, the simplicity of the design should offer a balanced contrast to the partly very complex graphics.

For headings, the index and occasional descriptive texts, I used justified type with stretched spaces. The words and chapter numbers have a certain arbitrary aesthetic, as the spacing between them varies greatly, but they still form a clear visual boundary in the book.

For the editorial design, I decided on a rather unconventional type of grid. I based it on the book format 18x24 cm (1 cm = 1 unit). There are 18 units horizontally and 24 vertically, leaving 2 cm margins in each case.

The graphics for the book were mainly created by myself. For most of them I used FilterForge, Photoshop or InDesign itself. The realistic and surrealistic illustrations were also created with the help of Midjourney.
