Logical Spaces

I live in a border city surrounded by factories and industrial warehouses, the limit between Barcelona and its airport area. Ironically, we also have some "protected nature zone" around the town. Last year, during my cycling and walking tours, I started to be interested in how the spaces expressed so many ideas by themselves, showing the contrast between a huge artificial and contaminated constructions with the dying nature fighting to survive.

This interest in the capacity of the space itself to express, to create dialogue; keept me thinking. So I decided to grab the camera and start exploring a familiar environment with a new point of view. Day by day, I found more contradictions and hidden problems just looking at the essence of those places. At the beggining, my eye wanted to capture the whole landscape of the perifery, showing the decay of both, nature and some of the buildings, making evident a battle between two worlds.

As time passed, my discourse grew up and I developed a more defined formal way of building it, tending progressively to abstract and isolate the lines, the shadows and the geometry of the industrial spaces. I decided that my project will not be based on a binary segmentation of reality. I needed to pursue more layers, opening the possible readings to the public. That is the reason why I focused on the "essence of the space", which I consider a little and synthesized representation of many aspects of our society. Spaces we build say a lot about us. In this case, they evidence our tendency to create order, to make schedules, to be organized, cold, logical...

At this point, I realized that the images became a sort of "blank space" in which the viewer could charge and create new ideas, escaping from a unique lecture. Along my way progressing, I was inspired by other artists like Andreas Gefeller, a German photographer who is always searching for new perspectives of our everyday-spaces to create debate; the masters of abstract art like Mondrian or Kandinsky, who were capable of compressing the world to its minimum expression: lines, geometry, balance, tensions... Another important referent is Godfrey Reggio, the director of experimental documentaries such as "Koyaanisqatsi" or "Naqoyqatsi", who has a cosmical and wide vision of the rhythms, repetitions and absurdity of modern society.

So I keep visiting those strange places surrounding my town, places where in fact I work now during the weekends as a warehouseman to finance my career. This gives even more time to observe and meditate. I have a strange sensation of being in the middle of the gear that moves the world: packages coming and going, trash being generated and processed, people spending their whole week working for what? A big unstoppable engine, perfectly designed to be efficient, mechanic; maybe as our lives.
