The General Store - A Customizable Poster

This was a really fun project. I wanted to create an image that as customizable as the game that inspired it while feeling like the custom elements always fit into their surroundings.
What I ended up doing was making the main character a small part of the bigger image. That way they were the focal point, but not the only thing to look at in the image.
The convenience store advertisements let me fit in as many references as possible and include more Pokemon that wouldn't normally be seen in this sort of environment.

The initial sketch. While I include lots of detail in my rough work, this sketch is actually quite small. Maybe 4 inches (10 cm) at its largest size. I try to work small so that I can make sure the composition isn't confusing. If it makes sense without all the detail then it's a good base.

While I get into a lot of detail with my colour studies, you can see by the close ups that it's still far from perfect. Sometimes I don't go into as much detail as this but once I start, I can't stop!

Part of creating the final image was making lots of different options. Not only did I illustrate the different starters, I recreated the male and female trainer with multiple skin tones and hair colours!
